Clawhammer Banjo - A Common Playing Style

A board-certified psychiatrist in Maine, Dr. Elliot Gruen has treated patients at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston and in a part-time private practice in Portland. Outside of his professional activities, Dr. Elliot Gruen enjoys various hobbies, including playing the banjo. He prefers playing the instrument using the clawhammer style.

While there are several ways to play the banjo, the clawhammer style is one of the most popular techniques used by players worldwide. Dating back several centuries, the technique is considered the traditional style of banjo playing.

The name refers to the "claw" shape that the playing hand takes while plucking the strings. When using the technique properly, clawhammer players make picking strokes on the strings with the index or middle finger while hitting the fifth string with their thumb. Because the style enables a player to maintain rhythm and harmony while strumming a melody, it is perfect for solo playing.

Some of the notable musicians who have been known to use the clawhammer technique include Neil Young, Ricky Skaggs, and Doc Watson. The style is most often associated with old-time Americana music, but it can be used when playing music of virtually any genre.
